Payton Black scored 20 points to lead 17th-ranked Duke past Georgia Tech 74-65 in each team's Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
Kira Orr added 17 points for Duke (7-1 overall, 1-0 ACC) to give the Lady Jackets their second loss to a ranked opponent in three games.
Tech (3-2, 0-1) was led by Kisha Ford's 13 points while Kenya Williams and Kathy Dortch each added 12. Carla Munnion, who had the nation's fifth-highest scoring average entering the game, was held to just four points. She was 1-for-9 from the field, missing all four of her second-half shots.
"That was the worst I've seen this team play in a long, long time," Head Coach Agnus
Berenato said. "Duke didn't play very well either, but Duke did what it had to do to win."
Orr scored 12 first-half points to lead the Blue Devils to a 34-25 halftime lead. Tech hit 18-of-35
second-half shots to stay close but the Lady Jackets got no closer than the nine-point halftime
deficit.
Duke led by as much as 56-38 following Black's jumper with 12:18 remaining. The Blue Devils
missed 11 of their last 18 shots, allowing the Lady Jackets to cut into the margin in the closing minutes.
"I don't know what the problem was tonight. We just never could get into an offensive flow,"
Berenato said. "Every time we started to close the gap, we would make a poor choice, offensively."
