Georgia Tech's eight game winning streak to open 2003 is the fifth best mark to start a season. The Yellow Jackets set a school record with a 16-0 start in 1987.
After the Colonials took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single from Tony Dokoupil, the Yellow Jackets immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jeremy Slayden led off the inning with his second home run of the season, before Nickeas belted a two-run double down the left field line to give Tech a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Matt Murton singled, stole second base and then took third base on a single from Remole. Murton, who went 2-for-4 in the game, came around to score on a groundout from Nickeas to make the score 4-1.
Tech starter Chris Goodman (1-0) earned the win, holding the Colonials to one run on five hits in 5.1 innings. Brian Burks picked up his second save of the season after allowing one unearned run over the final 3.2 innings of the game.
George Washington starter Greg Conden (2-1) took the loss despite a solid effort, allowing four runs on seven hits in seven innings while striking out seven batters.
