Tech Earns 11-8 Win over Wofford

ATLANTA-Patrick Long and Matt Wieters combined for four hits and six RBI to help Georgia Tech (20-11) to its seventh-straight victory, an 11-8 win over Wofford (17-14) Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Long, Wieters and Michael Fisher all collected two hits on the evening, and both Long and Wieters drove in three runs in the Jackets’ 599th victory under head coach Danny Hall.

Eddie Burns (3-1) earned the win in a designated staff day, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out five in 3.0 innings of work. Wieters picked up his third save of the season by tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Brandon Waring gave Wofford an early 2-0 lead when he hit his 14th home run of the season in the top of the first inning, but the Yellow Jackets exploded for six runs in the bottom of the frame to take a four-run lead over the Terriers. Wofford starter Chip Hunt walked three batters to begin the inning before Wieters ripped his first triple of the season to give the Jackets the 3-2 lead. A fielder’s choice by Patrick Long scored Wieters before Danny Payne drove in the final two runs of the inning with his 13th double of the season.

The Jackets added a pair of runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Long and when Fisher scored on a throwing error by Waring. An RBI triple by Fisher in the third stretched the Tech lead to seven runs before the Jackets pushed the score to 10-2 in the fourth on Long’s third home run of the season.

Wofford scratched for a run in the fifth inning when Michael Gilmartin scored on a wild pitch by Tech reliever Chris Hicks, but the Jackets responded with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Wally Crancer to push the score to 11-3.

The Terriers used a two-run home run by Keith Munns, an RBI single by Bradford Eaves and a two-run homer by Waring to pull within three runs in the sixth inning, but the Georgia Tech bullpen of Jared Hyatt and Wieters faced just one over the minimum over the final three innings to secure the victory for the Yellow Jackets.

Waring led the Terriers with a 4-for-5 performance, driving in four runs and scoring twice.

Hunt (1-2) took the loss for Wofford, giving up six runs on one hit while walking five in 0.2 innings.

The Jackets return to conference action this weekend when they travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to take on the Miami Hurricanes in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
