TECH WINS SERIES OPENER AT BOSTON COLLEGE 12-4

Yellow Jackets break open game with a 10-run fourth inning

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Wes Hodges had three hits and three RBI and Blake Wood pitched seven strong innings to lead No. 5 Georgia Tech (33-10, 14-8 ACC) to a 12-4 win over Boston College (23-21-1, 5-17) in the opener of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series on Friday at Shea Field.

Georgia Tech extended its ACC winning streak to six games, and the Yellow Jackets have won eight of their last nine league contests.

Wood (7-3) held the Eagles to one run on five hits in seven innings of work. After allowing a first inning run, the right-hander shut Boston College out over the next six frames.

Hodges finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Whit Robbins and Wally Crancer hit home runs.

Jeff Kindel extended his hitting streak to a career-long 15 games with two hits, and Matt Wieters and Luke Murton added two hits each.

Tied at 1-1 after three innings, Georgia Tech took control of the game with a 10-run fourth inning. The Yellow Jackets sent 14 batters to the plate and had nine hits in the inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Robbins, his eighth of the year, and a three-run double from Hodges. Michael Fisher had a two-run single, Kindel had a RBI double and Steven Blackwood added an RBI single.

Crancer hit a solo home run, his fifth of the year, to make the score 12-1 in the sixth inning.

Boston College starter Dan Houston (2-6) was charged with the loss after allowing 11 runs on 11 hits in four innings.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Jared McGuire. Johnny Ayers led off with a bloop double that fell between left fielder Steven Blackwood and center fielder Danny Payne. The two Georgia Tech players collided on the play, and Payne left the game with a shoulder injury.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning when Wes Hodges led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Luke Murton.

Boston College scored three runs over the final two innings off Georgia Tech reliever Jared Hyatt.

Georgia Tech and Boston College continue the three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. each day.
