TECH HOLDS OFF GEORGIA STATE 11-9

David Duncan got the win in his collegiate debut.
ATLANTA Whit Robbins homered and drove in a career-high six runs as third-ranked Georgia Tech (3-0) built an 8-0 lead through two innings and held on for an 11-9 win over Georgia State (0-1) on Wednesday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Robbins was 3-for-6 at the plate while contributing six RBI in the first four innings of the game.

Freshman David Duncan (1-0), making his first collegiate appearance, earned the win in relief of starter Ryan Turner.

Tim Gustafson picked up his first save of the year by working 2.2 shutout innings to close out the game.

The Yellow Jackets built an 8-0 lead through the first two innings, chasing Panther starter Romas Hicks (0-1) after just 1.2 innings. Robbins delivered a three-run homer to left-center field, his second of the year, and Jeff Kindel added an RBI double in a five-run first inning. Robbins added a two-run single and Wes Hodges had an RBI single in Techs three-run second inning.

Georgia State climbed back into the game with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Nick McIntyre and an RBI triple from Aeden McQueary-Ennis.

Robbins connected on a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 9-6, but McIntrye answered with a two-out RBI single in the sixth to pull within 9-7.

Luke Murton gave Tech an 11-7 lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Panthers made the score 11-9 on Charlie Pelts two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.

Georgia State tried to rally in the top of the ninth inning, putting runners at first and second with one out, but Gustafson worked out of the jam by getting a double play ground ball to end the game.

McEntyre and Pelt each had three hits for the Panthers.

The Yellow Jackets committed a season high four errors which led to four unearned runs.

Georgia Tech hosts Kennesaw State in a three-game series at Russ Chandler Stadium beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
