FLORIDA STATE COMPLETES SWEEP OF GEORGIA TECH 13-1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Tony McQuade homered and drove in five runs to lead eighth-ranked Florida State to a 13-1 win over fifth-ranked Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The win completed the Seminoles' (38-12, 6-6 ACC) three-game sweep of the Yellow Jackets.

FSU starter Marc LaMacchia earned the win to improve to 7-1 on the season. The right-hander scattered seven hits over six innings to limit the Yellow Jackets (32-8, 8-6) to one run. He issued two walks and struck out two batters. Daniel Hodges blanked Tech over the final three innings to earn his sixth save of the year.

The Seminoles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring without the aid of a hit. Tony McQuade drew a one out walk and scored after two hit batters and another walk.

After Georgia Tech knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Matt Murton, Florida State exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Bryan Zech led off with a single before consecutive walks to Stephen Drew and McQuade loaded the bases with no outs. Ryan Barthelemy drove in Zech with an RBI groundout, while Blair McCaleb plated two runs with a double down the left field line.

Florida State added four more runs in the sixth to make the score 8-1. Drew had an RBI single before McQuade belted a three-run homer, his third of the season, just inside the right field foul pole. In the seventh, the Seminoles loaded the bases after two outs with three infield singles before McQuade drove in two more runs with a double to stretch the lead to 10-1. Three more runs in the eighth, including RBI singles from Drew and Tony Riche, made the score 13-1. Drew went 3-for-4 in the game, while McQuade, McCaleb and Zech added two hits each.

The Seminoles turned four double plays in the game to offset nine Georgia Tech hits.

Tech starter Kyle Schmidt (3-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and five walks in 4.1 innings. Jeremy Slayden and Tyler Parker each had two hits in the game for the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech will return to action when the Yellow Jackets host Mercer at Russ Chandler Stadium on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
