GEORGIA STOPS TECH 7-1

ATHENS, Ga. - Clint Sammons and Adam Swann each drove in two runs, and Jason Fellows and Brandon Moorhead combined on a five-hitter to lead Georgia (13-5) to a 7-1 victory over Georgia Tech (18-4) at Foley Field Tuesday evening.

Georgia freshman Jason Fellows (1-0) earned his first career win after holding the Yellow Jackets to one run on three hits in five innings. He walked two batters and struck out four. Brandon Moorhead earned his fourth save by pitching four scoreless innings in relief, allowing only two hits while striking out two.

Tech starter Brian Burks (5-2) took the loss despite a solid effort. He allowed five runs, only three of which were earned, in five innings of work.

Georgia Tech took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning with all the damage coming after two outs. Wes Rynders singled up the middle and then took second base on a walk to Matthew Boggs. After Rynders stole third, he came around to score on a RBI single from Victor Menocal. Menocal's single extended his hitting streak to 20 games, tying his career high.

Georgia tied the score at 1-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. Darryl Blaze reached on a two-out fielding error by Tech second baseman Eric Patterson. Blaze then stole second base and score on a RBI single by David Coffey. The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the fourth after Lee Mitchell drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a two-out single by Sammons.

The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the sixth inning. Matt Cavender and Mitchell led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and both came around to score on Swann's double to right center field. Swann advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on Sammons' sacrifice fly. Georgia added two more runs in the seventh inning on a homerun by Chaz Lytle, his first of the season, and a RBI single from Cavender.

Georgia Tech and Georgia will meet again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta. Tech will send freshman Kyle Schmidt (1-0, 1.88 ERA) to the mound while Georgia will counter with Chris Webb (0-0, 6.00 ERA).
