TECH TOPS DUKE IN ACC TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND 16-2

FORT MILL, S.C. - Bryan Prince homered and drove in four runs and Richard Lewis tied an ACC Tournament record with five hits to lead fourth-seeded Georgia Tech (40-16) to a 16-2 lead over No. 5 seed Duke (23-32) in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Castle. The Yellow Jackets advances to the winners' bracket of the second round where they will face the winner of the Florida State/NC State game on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Georgia Tech starter Kevin Cameron (6-2) picked up the victory after holding Duke to two runs on six hits in seven innings of work. Duke's Ryan Caradonna (5-10) took the loss, surrendering six runs in six innings.

"It was a great start," said Tech head coach Danny Hall. "Kevin did a great job and was able to pitch out of trouble. I'm happy with the way we played."

Tech took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Richard Lewis singled, took second on Mark Teixeira's groundout, and came around to score on Prince's two-out RBI single. A solo home run from Jason Basil, his team-leading 14th of the season, made the score 2-0 in the second inning.

The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 4-0 in the third inning on a two-run homer from Prince, his sixth of the year.

The Blue Devils cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth when Kevin Kelly singled with two outs and scored on J.D. Alleva's RBI double.

Duke made the score 4-2 in the top of the seventh after Brian Patrick led off the inning with a walk, took third on Scott Grossi's single, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kelly.

Georgia Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead back to four runs at 6-2. Matt Murton led off the inning with an infield single and took third base on Matthew Boggs' single. A balk by Caradonna plated Murton and moved Boggs to second before Lewis doubled down the right field line to drive in Boggs with the second run of the inning.

The Yellow Jackets broke the game open with a ten-run eighth inning that made the score 16-2. Tech sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning, which was highlighted by a two-run single from Basil, who drove in three runs in the game, and RBI hits from Boggs, Lewis, Wes Rynders and Jason Perry.

"Once one guy hits one hard, another guy hits one hard," noted Hall. "The old saying is that hitting is contagious, and I believe that. We really hit some balls hard today."

Lewis led the Tech offense with a perfect 5-for-5 performance, while Boggs went 4-for-6 with two RBI. Prince, Rynders, Basil and Victor Menocal each added two hits as the Yellow Jackets outhit Duke, 19-6.

The scheduled starting pitcher for Duke, Kevin Thompson, was scratched just minutes prior to the game due to stiffness in his shoulder.

"We had planned on starting Kevin Thompson," said Duke head coach Bill Hillier. "He had a bit of a tender arm in the bullpen. I thought Ryan Caradonna did a pretty decent job after he settled down. We were in the ball game until we went into that eighth inning.
