CROWDER WINS 10TH, TECH ROUTS NORTH CAROLINA, 15-4

DURHAM, N.C. -- Chuck Crowder pitched no-hit ball for six innings, and Georgia Tech set season highs for runs and hits against an Atlantic Coast Conference team with a 15-4 victory over 20th-ranked North Carolina Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

Tech (38-18), which earned its third straight win over the Tar Heels (40-15) after dropping the opener of their regular season series last weekend, advances to a 5 p.m. winners' bracket game Thursday against fourth-ranked Florida State.

Crowder (10-5), won for the first time since Apr. 27 and turned the tables on North Carolina after losing a 5-0 decision last Saturday, holding the Tar Heels without a run or a hit in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out five, facing three batters over the minimum as Tech built a 12-0 lead for him. Freshman Kevin Cameron, Brad Busbin and Jesse Thompson each pitched an inning in relief, allowing Carolina four runs on four hits.

"We're here to win a tournament. I hated to take him out," Tech head coach Danny Hall said. "To be honest with you, I was hoping he'd give up a hit before I had to take him out. When the game got to the point where I could throw some other guys an inning a crack, I felt comfortable taking him out. I told him, though, that if we make it to Sunday, he's my pitcher. It was an outstanding performance. I think he likes this ballpark."

Crowder, a senior, improved to 3-0 and lowered his earned run average in the ACC Tournament to 0.37 in four career ACC Tournament appearances (one run in 24-1/3 innings). The win was the 33rd of his career, and he has joined Doug Creek as the only Tech pitchers ever to record 10 victories in three different seasons.

Offensively, Tech took advantage of a catcher's interference call to score four unearned runs in the first inning off UNC starter Ryan Snare (6-4), who blanked the Jackets on four hits Saturday in that 5-0 victory.

After the interference call, Jason Basil doubled home a run, Derik Goffena singled home two and then scored on one of the Tar Heels' six errors in the game. The Jackets added five more runs in the fourth inning off reliever Corey Richardson, highlighted by Eric McQueen's two-run double, and increased their lead to 12-0 with three runs in the fifth.

"There were two keys to the game for us," said Hall, whose team scored only six runs in three games last weekend against the Tar Heels. "We got some runs in the first inning off of Snare, who had been tough on us Saturday. That gave our hitters some confidence, and then Chuck got us through the first inning easily and kept the game in check the whole time. We were also able to keep scoring. We got hits off a good pitching staff today."

Goffena finished with three RBI on two hits, while McQueen and Matthew Boggs had three hits apiece as Tech accumulated 18 in the game off four Carolina pitchers. Richard Lewis and Mark Teixeira scored three times each, and Stephen Donaghey hit his 12th home run of the season in the eighth.

Ryan Earey got Carolina's first hit with a leadoff double in the seventh off Cameron that fell just inside the right field foul line. He scored the first UNC run two groundouts later.
